Meet Mariajosé García, our Sports Risk Monitor based in Bogotá, whose path into iGaming began far from the sportsbook environment. Originally trained as an Environmental Engineer, Mariajosé’s journey into the industry started after being introduced to the industry by her brothers, who were already working in sports trading roles. It quickly evolved into a long-term career shaped by curiosity, progression, and adaptability.
Today, she plays a key role in ensuring Betsson Group’s pre-match offering remains both competitive and well-balanced, working closely with trading and risk teams to manage exposure and support informed decision-making.
In this interview, she shares how her role contributes to maintaining a consistent and reliable offering across the platform and why collaboration and continuous learning are central to her day-to-day work.
Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your journey to becoming a Sports Risk Monitor at Betsson Group?
I’m Mariajosé García, a former Environmental Engineer from Colombia, currently based in Bogotá. My journey hasn’t been linear. I started working in environmental education and community projects, using art to connect people with nature.
At the same time, an opportunity came through my brothers. We are four siblings, and all of us have worked in this industry. They introduced me to sports trading, and I decided to give it a try. What started as something small gradually became a parallel career. I began as a Sports Trader focused on US sports, later moved into a supervisory role, and today I work as a pre-match Sports Risk Monitor at Betsson.

How would you describe your role and how you analyse market movements and betting trends?
I usually explain it as keeping things running smoothly. We aim to offer attractive options for customers while ensuring the business remains sustainable.
In pre-match, this means reviewing events before they start, analysing how bets are being placed and how the situation is evolving. We also monitor how prices move across different operators and whether anything looks unusual.
Based on this, we assess risk using factors such as customer profile, market activity, stake size and league type, and make adjustments where needed to maintain a controlled and sustainable position. This combines data, experience and judgement to anticipate and manage potential risks.
Collaboration is key, how do you work with teams like Customer Risk Analysts or product managers to implement effective risk management strategies?
It’s a very collaborative process. Our sportsbook works like an interconnected system where every team plays a role.
From our side, we focus on identifying and managing risk across markets, while Customer Risk Analysts help us understand customer behaviour by spotting patterns, unusual activity, or higher-risk profiles. That combination gives us a more complete picture.
We also work closely with traders, who are specialists in each sport, and with product teams to ensure the tools and features support our decisions. It’s about constant communication, sharing insights, aligning quickly, and acting as one team.

Your role requires knowledge across multiple sports and markets, how do you stay up to date and keep learning?
A big part of the learning comes from experience. Over time, you start to understand how different markets behave, which leagues require more attention, and what kind of customer activity can represent higher risk.
It also depends a lot on the season, different sports become more relevant at different times. While we focus on risk, we rely on traders for deep sport-specific expertise, which makes teamwork essential.
It’s a role that requires attention to detail, pattern recognition, and constant learning.

How does your role contribute to Betsson’s overall success?
Our role helps ensure the sportsbook remains balanced and sustainable. We manage risk in a way that protects the business while also ensuring a fair and competitive experience for customers.
By identifying risks early and making informed decisions, we help maintain a healthy margin and support overall performance. At the same time, we contribute to the quality of the product by ensuring the offering is consistent and reliable.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
What I enjoy the most is how dynamic the role is. There’s always something new happening. Seasons change, different sports become active, new markets appear, and new situations constantly challenge you to adapt.
I also really value the collaborative environment. The team dynamic is very positive, and it genuinely feels good to come to work and share the day with colleagues.
At the same time, it’s a role that pushes you to keep learning and improving, which makes it both challenging and rewarding.
Why did you choose Betsson Group, and what has stood out to you since joining?
I chose Betsson because it’s a well-recognised company within the industry, and among traders it is known as a place many aspire to join.
What also made a big difference for me was the quality of the working environment. It offers stability, fair compensation, and conditions that support your day-to-day life. Being able to work close to home and maintain a good work-life balance is something I truly value.
I feel very fortunate to be part of a team that, although relatively new, has grown quickly and proven to be strong and highly capable.

What would you say to someone considering applying for a role in your team or at Betsson?
Be open to learning and don’t worry about knowing everything from the start. This is an industry where you grow through experience.
If you are curious, detail-oriented, and enjoy working in a team, it’s a great environment to develop and grow.
